Dataset Documentation

Basic Documentation - Grade 12

At present, the datasets available for analysis under the Monitoring the Future Remote Access Service consist of the Grade 12 cross-sectional administrations for 1976 through 2007. There are six datasets for each year from 1976 through 1988 -- one for each of the five forms and one "common core" dataset -- and seven datasets each year beginning with 1989, when a form was added to the questionnaire set. The basic documentation for these datasets can be found on the ICPSR/SAMHDA site. A user of the MTFRAS should go to this site to obtain codebook information on the vast majority of the variables available through the MTFRAS. The ICPSR/SAMHDA web pages contain relevant codebook documentation that can be downloaded or viewed on line.

Alternatively, for the 1976-2007 MTF Grade 12 core cross-sectional surveys, a user may choose to browse the codebook information also available in SAMHDA's SDA MTF archive.

Supplementary Documentation - Grade 12

Documentation describing those MTFRAS variables that are now available for analysis but are not included in the ICPSR/SAMHDA documentation is supplied below. These include actual weight and design variables, as well as other variables that are "bracketed" or omitted from publicly-released MTF datasets. Simulated versions of all these variables are available for testing in the test dataset section of this website.

Basic Documentation - Grades 8 and 10

At present, the datasets available for analysis under the Monitoring the Future Remote Access Service consist of the Grade 8 and Grade 10 cross-sectional administrations for 1991 through 2007. There are two datasets for each grade for each year from 1991 through 1996 -- one for each of the two forms. There are four datasets (and questionnaire forms) for each grade in 1997 through 2007.

Supplementary Documentation - Grades 8 and 10

Documentation describing those MTFRAS variables that are now available for analysis but are not included in the ICPSR/SAMHDA documentation is supplied below. These include actual weight and design variables, as well as other variables that are "bracketed" or omitted from publicly-released MTF datasets. Users may want to run a test analysis using the grade 8 test dataset, which includes simulated versions of all variables described in the documentation below.
