Longitudinal Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Health and Socioeconomic Outcomes in a Vulnerable Population
The Population Association of America 2025 Annual Meeting starts on Thursday, April 10. The Survey Research Center is well represented – see the full schedule of researchers. We are posting some highlights of the presentations this week.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted daily life, but its effects on health, economics, and social well-being have varied based on work, family, and health circumstances. To investigate these disparities, PSC and SRC affiliates Colter Mitchell, Helen Meier, and Christopher Monk leverage the Future of Families and Childhood Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) to analyze longitudinal data from before and throughout the pandemic, presenting his findings at PAA2025.
Key Insights from the Study:
- FFCWS follows 4,898 children born between 1998-2000 and their parents across seven waves—with 3,580 families participating in the most recent wave.
- Over 87% of FFCWS families are considered underserved or COVID-19 vulnerable.
- 50% of parents & 36% of young adults were essential workers, while over 20% lost their jobs during the pandemic.
