The Enduring Gender Gap in Care Expectations for Daughters and Sons
The Population Association of America 2025 Annual Meeting starts on Thursday, April 10. The Survey Research Center is well represented – see the full schedule of researchers. We are posting some highlights of the presentations this week.
At PAA2025, Sarah Patterson, an affiliate of Survey Research Center and Population Studies Center, will present her research on the gender gap in care expectations for daughters and sons. Using 20 years of data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), Patterson analyzed how parental expectations for caregiving have evolved.
She found that daughters are still more likely to be expected to provide care than sons. Daughters are more likely to provide care than sons, regardless of expectations. Future analyses will examine how expectations vary by parents’ gender and family structure. Stay tuned to learn more!
