Geographic Variation in Health and Economic Determinants of Elective Surgery

Greater understanding of the economic and causes and consequences of healthcare treatment intensity for patients is essential to inform healthcare reform and to understand the role of Medicare in encouraging productive engagement amongst older adults. In this context, I propose to use Health and Retirement Study (HRS) survey response data linked to administrative Medicare data for patients in four surgical cohorts (elective hip or knee (joint) replacement for osteoarthritis and elective coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) for heart conditions, back surgery for back pain and cataracts for vision problems) in a project.
