Internet Interviewing and the HRS

Since 2003, in a joint project between RAND and the University of Michigan, Internet Interviewing and the HRS, we have explored the feasibility of conducting the complete HRS core interview over the internet. Although adding internet interviewing to the HRS data collection toolkit provides several opportunities for quality improvements and-in the longer run-for cost reductions, it does not yet take full advantage of the possibilities offered by present-day technology for frequent and reliable measurements of a multitude of behavioral parameters. The current proposal aims to explore the potential of integrating new technology to provide a much richer picture of people’s daily lives during a time of transition from working life to retirement, and from healthy life until the end of life. Consistent with the goals of the previous R01s, we aim to inform the HRS about the feasibility of such measurements and how they could be incorporated in the core HRS in the medium-term. The context for the proposed project is the Understanding America Study (UAS), a population representative Internet panel of households. To maintain comparability with HRS we will concentrate on the age group 55 and older.
