JPSM Short Courses-Issues in Data Sciences: Unpacking “Big Data”

This is an introduction to issues surrounding the use of 'Big Data' for social measurement. This course is intended for people who do NOT have a background in data analytics, and is an introduction to the methods used in 'Big Data' techniques, and the nature of the data.This course will focus on Big Data for social measurement. The term 'Big Data' is a short hand for a variety of information access, retrieval, storage, and manipulation techniques. It is not possible in a short course to learn each of these techniques, but people who take this course will have a much better sense of the nuts and bolts of Big Data as a cluster of practices, and be more informed about the various aspects of Big Data research. In addition, participants will be exposed to current studies that use Big Data approaches to create population-level insights. Finally, people who take this course will learn more about resources to continue learning about Big Data.
