Matthew Shapiro discusses the potential ongoing effects of the government shutdown

In a Time Magazine article, ‘We’ll Have No Other Option Than Declaring Bankruptcy.’ How the Shutdown Could Impact Government Workers for Months, Matthew Shapiro says that if the government shutdown ends in the next week or so the financial impact on workers is likely to be minimal, however, if it continues into February, the lost spending will add up to a larger, negative impact:

The macroeconomic effects could potentially be noticeable. If it's resolved this month, and federal workers are paid retroactively, some of that spending will be made up. For contractors, that's not the case. Those are dollars which are permanently lost.
