Project Summary

The project examines income distribution by social class in the US manufacturing sector from 1967 to 2022 at the establishment level. It has two primary objectives: (a) to describe the evolution of the labor share and the compensation gap between production and non-production workers over the period, and (b) to provide an account of these trends in terms of workers organizational power, firms market power, managerial practices, labor market institutions, and labor market conditions. To achieve these objectives, the project will integrate data from the Annual Survey of Manufacturers, the Census of Manufacturers, and the Management and Organizational Practices Survey, as well as unique data created by the project using information from the National Labor Relations Board and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service and standard labor market data on institutions (e.g., minimum wages) and conditions (e.g., unemployment rates).
