Noah Webster, Ph.D. is a Research Associate Professor and Director of the Life Course Development Program in the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. He is also Research Associate Professor in the School for Environment and Sustainability (by courtesy) and an Intermittent Lecturer in the Program in the Environment. Trained as a sociologist, his research examines intersections between built, natural, and social environments. In this work he integrates theories of social relations and ecological context to examine antecedents and outcomes of social relations as well as the ways in which social relations can offset and amplify the effects of the built and natural environment on multiple health outcomes. This work involves conducting both large population-based observational studies and community-based intervention trials. His work is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation. Dr. Webster is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, and has served in leadership roles in multiple academic professional societies including the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development, the Society for the Study of Human Development, and the Gerontological Society of America. He is also Co-Director of the University of Michigan’s Sustainability Cultural Indicators Program (SCIP), which administers campus-wide representative surveys to assess sustainability knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes among students, faculty, and staff over time.
