Continuity and Change in American Economic and Social Life: The PSID 2017 – 2020

The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) is the world?s longest running household panel survey. With almost 50 years of data on the same families and their descendants, the PSID is a cornerstone of the data infrastructure for empirically-based social science research in the U.S. and the world. With its long-term measures of economic and social wellbeing, the study has allowed researchers and policy analysts to investigate the dynamism inherent in social and behavioral processes. The long panel, genealogical design, and broad content provide scientists a unique and powerful opportunity to study evolution and change within the same families over decades.

Building on this success, three primary activities are proposed for the next five-year funding cycle: designing the PSID questionnaire content to facilitate the investigation of current and emerging scientific and policy questions; collecting the 2017 (N = 9,850) and 2019 (N=10,244) waves of the main interview; processing and distributing the data in user-friendly formats, as well as providing help to researchers to facilitate their use of the data.
