The Michigan Department of Education is applying to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for a Project AWARE grant. Through this proposal MDE expects to build and expand capacity at the state and local levels to make schools safer, improve school climate, increase awareness of mental health issues, and connect children and youth who have behavioral health issues with needed services. The program will focus on creating and sustaining an enhanced infrastructure aligning policies, practices, programs and partnerships around meeting the mental health needs of students and their families, and providing high-quality, research-based professional development. The Youth Policy Lab will serve as the program evaluator and will help assess whether MDE is meeting its performance objectives.
